Kim Chang-suk (1879-1962) was a notable Confucian scholar and independence activist. Right after the March First Independence Movement in 1919, he wrote a petition for national independence as a representative of Confucian scholars in Korea, travelled to Shanghai, and sent it to the Paris Peace Conference in the same year. He participated in the establishment of the Provisional Legislative Assembly, and led a fund-raising campaign for the foundation of a base for the independence movement as well. After the liberation in 1945, he was involved in the expulsion of Confucian scholars who had collaborated with the Japanese during the colonial period, and tried to rebuild the foundation of Confucian circles. He also established Sungkyunkwan University and greatly contributed to the development of education in Korea. His tomb is regarded as a great historical and educational sanctuary where Korean citizens can pay homage to his patriotic life.
