Ui-Gugok

Ui Valley
Hong Yang-ho (1724–1802), was a prominent figure during the reign of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, resided in what is now the Doseonsa Temple valley. Inspired by the valley’s beautiful scenery, he named it
'Ui-dong Gugok' and in his collection of literary works, 『Lee Gye-jip (耳溪集)』, referred to Uigugok as
『Uidongjanggi (牛耳洞庄記)』.

Location

  • Uidong Mountain, area 68-1, Uidong Valley 2.3㎢

1st Valley Mangyeongpok(萬景瀑)

Tall mountains are lined up like a folding screen and cut through the air, encircling the area like a balustrade. The large rock wall at the front is about 3 meters high, with its width being more than half of its height.

All the stones are so smooth as if they have been carved and placed there, so there is nothing for even a flying squirrel or money to grab onto. The water flows like silk down from the top, and its sound travels several miles.

2nd Valley Jeokchwibyeong(積翠屛)

A large stone is lying on its side, and it is flat and wide, like a statue. It was named Seongseok (醒石) because it could seat dozens or even hundreds of people

From here, the mountains gradually get smaller and the valleys merge again. Blue cliffs rise up raggedly to the left and right. A rapid stream of water tumbles down, forcing people to traverse along the wall along a narrow path. The rushing water crisscrosses as it is pounds down.

3rd Valley Chanunbong(瓚雲峰)

As you follow the water down while leaning against the incline, the stones are full of colorful patterns and as the water hits them it looks like a sheet of silk full of wrinkles that’s been spread out. On the left side of the hill, Seonbawi Rock forms a peak that is frighteningly steep. It’s worth admiring the clouds and faraway fields.

4th Valley Jinuigang(振衣崗)

There are several large stones, which are blocking the flow of water and stand tall, flat and wide. If you grab hold of them and head on up, you can see several valleys at once. Your ears will be full with the sound of the wind and water.

There is a round boulder, shaped like a large bell, and when the water hits it, it rings with a clear sound that is audible from afar.

5th Valley Okgyeongdae(玉鏡臺)

If you go down about 200 meters following the valley, large rocks form a board, which horizontally blocks the entrance to the valley. It shines brightly like polished jade and the white parts look like a powdery cloud, while the clear water flows down in ripples in all directions.

Smooth and flat like whetstone, it would be suitable for making large letters, but it was called Semukji (洗墨池) because it had a hollow hole in the center and was facing upwards like a large trough.

6th Valley Wolyeongdam(月影潭)

White rocks that are bright and clear are unevenly spread all over. You could use them as a mirror, but there is a round puddle in the middle, which is about 50 meters wide.

While surrounded by several peaks the sky of the valley is wide open, so you can see several mountains such as Suraksan and Dobongsan. The peaks rise high into the sky, revealing their splendor, as they were arranged on a folding screen, and when their shadows are reflected under the moonlight, it clears people’s minds.

7th Valley Takyeongam(濯纓巖)

There was a mysterious stone in the open valley, and the torrent formed a small waterfall. On the right side, a large rock is pressing down on the waterway and it is curved in a semicircle like a roof, so it was a good place to sit and enjoy an alcoholic beverage.
Since the topography has changed significantly, more accurate data on the historical location is needed.

8th Valley Myeongoktan(鳴玉灘)

Many stones are scattered here and there, looking like sheep scattered across a field and horses drinking water.

The rapids seem to roll up, swirl, spike, and then hang back, so there is a clear sound like jade.

9th Valley Jaeganjeong(在澗亭)

The two hills are bright, the water is clear and the sand is white. Several pillars are placed on stones to reach the water's edge, which is called Jaeganjeong.
Currently, Jaeganjeong has been destroyed, but since the remains of a house from the Joseon Dynasty have been found nearby, it is estimated that the area is the location of the 9th valley called Jaeganjeong.
