Beon-dong

Beon-dong

Gangbuk-Gu

The name Beon-dong was written as 'Beol-ri' in the 'Grand Map of the Capital Castle' by Jeong Seon and 'Daedongyeojido' by Kim Jeong-ho. It was recorded as East West Sunshin-bang (outside the capital castle) and Beon-ri outside the small east gate. It looks like Beol-ri has become Beon-ri.

When studying the origin of the name Beon-dong, a secretive rumor was recorded in a book called 'Ungwanbiki' during the Goryeo dynasty. According to the story, the king and his cabinet feared that a new dynasty would rise under the Yi family name. One day, they heard that the area under Mountain Triangle was full of peach trees, which symbolized the prosperity of the Yi family. To counter this, they sent woodcutters, known as beolisa, to cut down the trees, and the area was later called Beol-ri and then Beon-ri.
